Saisir l'insaisissable: Capturing the Elusive

November 23, 2022 - January 5, 2023

Reflective surfaces have always presented a captivating yet challenging subject for photographers. This challenge was masterfully overcome in the exhibition Saisir l'insaisissable (Capturing the Elusive), showcased at the Atticus Arts Gallery in Bath. Through the use of innovative techniques, such as one-way mirrors, remote triggering, periscope lenses, and multiple exposures with compositing, the exhibition captured stunning images of reflective spheres without revealing any trace of the camera.

The work on display not only demonstrated a deep expertise in photography but also a skilful implementation of techniques reminiscent of those employed by Jeff Koons in creating his metallic sculptures. Koons’ process, involving detailed sketches, 3D models, and advanced industrial techniques, results in highly polished, reflective metal pieces. Similarly, this exhibition adopted these advanced techniques, tailored to a unique photographic approach. By traveling to the precise locations where the sculptures were to be installed, careful study was conducted to determine the appropriate size and scale for each sphere. This ensured a seamless integration with the environment, while also minimizing environmental impact.

The spheres, left in their natural, polished metal state, were used to highlight specific environmental issues such as deforestation, pollution, and climate change. Notably, the Reflections on Deforestation installation, featured at the Handsworth Park Arts Trail, utilized these spheres to create a profound dialogue between nature and human intervention.
